OUTSIDE THE MAYORS’ WORLD SUMMIT IN MEXICO CITY

OUTSIDE THE MAYORS' WORLD SUMMIT IN MEXICO CITY

November 18, 2010

Since November 17, Klimaforum10 has kept a carp and a discussion table outside the seat of the Mayors' World Summit in down town Mexico Cy, where more than 3000 mayors from all over the world have met to discuss climate change and other economic issues. Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico Cy Mayor, hosts this world meeting, to anticipate his candidacy for Mexico's presidency in 2012 elections; he loves great governmental shows, the big spectacle and most of all: the" green image"; sometimes, he rides a bike. Nevertheless, Mexico CY has never endured in its history so much construction of big towers and of infrastructure for automobile circulation and so many trees felled; so much paving activities and so many animals killed as in Ebrards' administration. Mexico City's outskirts campesinos had never suffered so much because of megaproject construction as in Ebrards' government: some of them have died defending their land.   Because of his constructor frenzy He has provoked the birth of many neighborhood movements in Mexico Cy: the most relevant: against the construction of Metro line 12 to Tlahuac, a line towards rural campesino land; against the Supervía megaproject: a freeway constructed over the western gorges of Mexico Cy, close to the sierra de las Cruces woods; against the construction of the Second Floor in Periferico Freeway in Cuatro Caminos. A grenadier's army, hundreds of police squadrons, lawyers, informal negotiators and citizens' spies, help Ebrard in his war against the local society and his environment. Some Klimaforum10' members debated these two days on cities and climate change, with passers by in this carp. We will continue this discussion in our political space in Cancun.
